Sr. Dorothy Altman

Holy Names Sister Dorothy Altman (Miriam Beatrice), who served throughout Oregon, died Nov. 1. She was 87.
Sister Altman was born Feb. 22, 1921, in Spokane, Wash. In 1943, she entered the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary at Marylhurst.
Specializing in art and home economics, her education included undergraduate studies at Holy Names College, Spokane, and Marylhurst College, Oregon; a bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington; master’s degree in education from St. Louis University, and studies at Parsons’ School of Environmental Design in New York.
Her early years of ministry included teaching at St. Mary’s Academy, Medford; St. Anne Elementary and Holy Names Academy, Seattle; St. Patrick Elementary, Spokane; Cathedral Elementary, Portland; St. Vincent Elementary, Salem. Her next phase of ministry included 21 years of teaching at Fort Wright College, Spokane. She was a member of the Handweavers’ Guild of America, and 1975-77 president of the local guild. Her work was shown in many Northwest art exhibitions. In her later years, She became an “artist in residence” at Marian Hall, then at Convent of the Holy Names, Spokane.
She is survived by her fellow religious, her sister, Sister Rita Louise, several cousins, many friends and former students.
